2009 National Championship celebration dampened by vandalism (again)
|
|
December 22, 2009 | While the Warhawks were in Salem, VA for Stagg Bowl XXXVII, head coach Lance Leipold’s
car was vandalized in the parking lot of the Student Athletic Complex. This is the fourth incident of car
vandalism since the Warhawks won their first national football title in 2007. In additional to Coach Leipold’s car being
vandalized, Athletic Director Paul Plinske and defensive coordinator Brian Borland had their cars damaged immediately following
the title game in 2007.
"It's obviously not a coincidence that this occurred again," said Athletics
Director Paul Plinske. "Clearly someone does not like to see our success, and it's someone from our community who
harbors bad feelings and wants to take away from something special. It's definitely a personal attack, and it's a
huge concern because it threatens our safety and well-being."
"This behavior is unacceptable and I'm
tired of it. Our coaches, staff and student-athletes deserve better. We hope people will step up for what's right and
help stop this non-sense."
UW-Whitewater Police Services seeks your assistance in apprehending the individual(s)
responsible for these actions. If you have any information or belief of possible suspects please contact us. You
may report anonymously.

Warhawks Win Championship!

December 20, 2009 | Story
and photo from warhawkfootball.com
16 inches
of snow? For the Warhawk football team, it has been there and done that.
Saturday's
NCAA Division III Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl delayed five hours to the snow storm? No big deal, Wisconsin is all about snow.
The UW-Whitewater football team played a stunning first half against the Purple Raiders. Jeff
Donovan, playing his final game for the Warhawks, finished 26 of 40 for 323 yards with two touchdowns and helped his team
convert on nine of nine third-down plays in the first half.
With
the score tied 28-all deep into the fourth quarter, Levell Coppage, the nation's leading scorer, saved his best for last.
The pride of Oak Park, Illinois, scored the national championship, game winning touchdown from 31 yards out to give the Hawks
35-28 lead with 1:17 remaining in the game. He finished the game with 22 carries for 111 yards and three touchdowns earning
the games Most Outstanding Player Award.
Whitewater was not done yet. Wes Hicks
forced Mount Union quarterback Kurt Rocco to fumble. Kyle Supianoski recovered the fumble, one of five turnovers in the game
by the Purple Raiders. Four plays later, Jeff Schebler capped his historic career by drilling a 44-yard field goal with just
26 seconds left in the game.
(In the adjacent photo - a happy group
of Warhawks pose in front of the Salem Stadium scoreboard. The score told the story - Whitewater 38, Mount Union 28 - photo

Aaron
Rusch caught eight passes for 109 yards, including a 10-yard TD pass that put the Warhawks ahead, 28-14, at halftime. His
37-yard reception set up an earlier score and made him No. 1 in school history in receiving yardage breaking Derek Stanley's
career mark.
Mount Union (14-1) outgained the Warhawks, 471-467, but
Whitewater limited the Purple Raiders to 88 yards rushing and a 2.8 average per carry. In addition, Whitewater didn't
allow a sack and got five of their own.
Purple Raiders quarterback Kurt Rocco
finished 23 of 39 for 383 yards and three touchdowns, and All-American wide receiver Cecil Shorts III had 10 catches for 185
yards and two touchdowns.
"It has been a long journey," Whitewater coach
Lance Leipold said. "They had a chance to be a great football team. Guys didn't care who got the carries or catches.
And our defense epitomized that. You look at the stats after a game and nothing jumps out at you. They just do the job."
The 2009 Warhawk football team is the first to record 15 wins in a season. They are the second
to bring the Walnut and Bronze back to Whitewater.

The UW-W QB Club would like to congratulate
QB Jeff Donovan on his WIAC Offensive Player of the Week award for his November 7thefforts versus UW-Oshkosh.
In the contest, Donovan completed 87.9% of his passes on 29-33 passing. This is the second time that Donovan has won
the award in 2009, as he also won the award back in Week #1 of the season when the Warhawks traveled to Dickinson State in
